Scarborough Visit Wednesday 9th October to Friday 12th October

Day 1

On Wednesday 9th October Year 4 climbed aboard the school mini-buses and travelled up to Scarborough in North Yorkshire. After a comfort break, we arrived at the youth hostel. We were eager to get out and about to stretch our legs after our 5-hour journey. We quickly ate our lunch and set off to explore the town.

Mr Gentle set off at a cracking pace and we tried our best to keep up with him! Our first sight of the sea, had us all cheering. We walked quickly down to the beach- South Bay. The waves were rolling in and we saw people walking their dogs and some ladies even braved the cold of the North Sea for a brief swim! We didn’t join them, but Mr Gentle sent us down to the shoreline to splash in the waves. Some were more enthusiastic than others and some even sat down in the shallows! Then we raced across the beach!

Having spotted the arcades as we drove through the town, we were eager to spend some of our money. With 7 different arcades to choose from, we were spoilt for choice. Teachers gave us some of our money and off we went. Most of us won prizes and we had a fabulous time surrounded by flashing lights and the sound of coins rattling.

After that, we went to have an ice-cream. We could choose our favourite flavours! Yum!! We continued to walk along the promenade taking in the sights and sounds of this seaside town.

When we got back to the hostel, we were told our rooms, and we took up our cases and unpacked. Then it was teatime. We had pasta or sausage and mash, followed by cheesecake. After tea we had a quiz about History and a picture quiz about book covers. Winners won prizes. Then it was off to shower and get into our cosy beds.

Day 2

Today the weather was not so kind. After a hearty cooked break fast we set off. Again Mr Gentle set the pace! Today we were going to the SEA LIFE centre. When we arrived, we were met by a guide who took us around. We saw the seals being fed and we all held a shark egg sac called a mermaid’s purse.

After that we ate our packed lunch in the café. Then we were off again. This time we went to gift shops to buy things to take home. The sea was much rougher with white rollers crashing over the railings. We also went on a train ride and waved to everyone we passed.

When we got back to the hostel, we were ready for our tea. We had chicken nuggets, burgers or vegetable stir fry, followed by ice cream. Then we collected our torches and went out into the night. We walked around the local park and used our torches to find our way. We used our ears to identify sounds that were all around us. Feeling brave we followed Mr Gentle into an old Victorian cemetery. When we got back, we had hot chocolate and a cake. We slept well that night!

Day 3

Our last day. We ate breakfast and packed our bags for home We soon set out to make the best of our last day. The weather was beautiful but cold. Unfortunately, the tide was in, so we continued on our walk to the castle. Scarborough castle sits on a headland that separates South Bay and North Bay. It is a ruined castle, and we got to look around and visit the shop with the last of our money. When we got back to the hostel it was time to have our packed lunch and start our journey home. We had a great time thanks to Mr Gentle, Mrs Thornton, Mrs Finch, Miss Hall and Mrs Lewis. We waved goodbye to Scarborough and arrived back at school at 6.45pm.

Total steps walked – 42,567
